Motionless in White – When Love Met Destruction

I think there should be a cap on how many bands one genre can have. I mean, there’s always room for additions, but there should be some kind of sign up process because the number of these metalcore acts using synth for “atmosphere” in their songs is getting old really quick. However, Motionless in White, a new act on Fearless Records, actually has something to offer: talent.

Starting this EP off with energy crank to 11 is, “To Keep From Getting Burned,” which I think does a solid job of showcasing the group entirely. We have the synth overlays, screams, swearing, and a sung hook that really pulls you in. The music is solid and the guitar work is a force to be reckoned with or battled. I don’t like the use of a key player just for fun synth layers, but I will admit it’s quite catchy. “Ghost in The Mirror,” the second track, is this band’s golden goose. Everything falls into place and is polished with gorgeous production. I mean, yes, there is some similarity in the thematic writing as Alesana, but this is a whole different take on a similar point of view. It’s just ridiculously catchy. Following this is the They’re Only Chasing Safety like riffs of, “Whatever You Do…Don’t Push The Red Button,” but it fails to compare to the previous track.

The back half of the EP offers much of the same sound, but it still goes down smooth. This isn’t the heavy act you play for your parents to show them just because it’s heavy doesn’t mean it’s not fun. This is the act to blast when you’re pissed at the world or simply want to throw down. the guitar work on, “Destroy Everything,” sends your mind into circles while the breakdown about halfway into, “Billy in 4-C…” is sure to send people to the hospital. Seriously, this is some serious noise. The group seems to give every track every ounce they have and leave it all on the floor. It’s pleasing to find that attitude still existing in a time where it seems the right here and clothes can get you signed. Finally, we’re given the stab you in the throat fury of, “The Seventh Circle.” The track actually has a nice interlude type area near the middle, but there’s no denying the fire that burns throughout this and the rest of the EP.

I won’t change my stance on the metalcore scene and how it’s ridiculously flooded currently, but Motionless in White offers us a ray of hope that music with substance in this genre still exists. The fury they demonstrate on When Love Met Destruction is exactly the kind of passion too many acts these days lack. It may only be 6 tracks, but it’s completely worth your time.

Score: 7.5/10
