A Conversation with Therefore I Am

Up and coming Equal Vision act Therefore I Am have just released their new record, The Sound of Human Lives and now, a day after the record hit stores, we have an interview with the band just for you. These guys instantly made our “acts to watch” list following their placement on the Warped comp this year and I expect them to blow up very soon.

UTG: Hey guys, how are you today?

TIA: Pretty good, just got to California. We’re going to be doing some errands for Warped Tour.

UTG: Now, I know we’re only talking on this day in particular for a certain reason, would you like to share with our readers what’s special about today?

TIA: Just came out today. We’re excited.

UTG: Congratulations on getting the record out, especially on such a beloved label as Equal Vision. How did you guys come to work with them?

TIA: Well, through various people that we knew. We had gotten a chance to meet some people at the label and we loved what they did/do and one thing led to another and after some dialogue and such – they wanted us and we wanted them.

UTG: Now let’s discuss the record, the title is, The Sound of Human Lives, what’s the story behind the title? I mean but seems like it could be a concept record or perhaps just a basic way of summing up the material, but then again, that’s just my opinion.

TIA: It kind of summarizes. To us, it’s who we were when we wrote it. Living in Boston and dealing with things in life. We’re based round real life experiences and that’s what this is. Growing up in a world of fear and confusion and not understanding it. That’s what the record is about. Family, relationships, higher beings, or lack thereof.

UTG: Well, obviously every album has a reason for existing. A message to get across if you will. What do you think is the message of your new record?

TIA: There’s not a direct message where we’re trying to directly influence a decision or anything. Lyrically, I’m guy with stories to tell and I share my life stories through the songs. Like looking at art, everyone takes something away on their owna nd that’s what we want. It could be a bookmark or a soundtrack. That’s the joy of music.

UTG: What kind of promotional work do you guys have planned for this record? I live in Boston currently and it seems everywhere I look there are TIA stickers on walls, sidewalks, etc. So obviously you have very dedicated fans.

TIA: We always try and give back. A lot of those stickers were probably us. We tend to throw them everywhere we can, but yea, we try to give stuff back. Right now, signing up for our mailing list will get you entered for a set of Warped passes for every date.

UTG: Alright, well we prefer to not end interviews on a final question, but rather a closing comment. So feel free to use this time to discuss something outside of TIA that’s been on your mind:

TIA: You know what bums me out? This is why I don’t like living in New England. No one says “hello” when you walk down the street. It bums me out that you can walk down the street and no one says “hello” to you. So, if you’re reading this, tell a stranger “hello” today.
