MGMT as ‘Space Vikings’ on children’s show

On the face of it, indie rock and children’s television make for strange bedfellows. But as that Apples in Stereo “Powerpuff Girls” video, Feist on “Sesame Street”, and “Pancake Mountain” have proved, this kind of thing can turn out great as long as everything is as bright and flashy and catchy as possible.

Last week, we told you that the psychedelic Nickelodeon monster-fest “Yo Gabba Gabba!” was preparing to release an album crammed with indie heavy hitters. And now we’ve got an mp3 from that album: of Montreal’s tooth-cleaning instructional “Brush Brush Brush”.

Of Montreal’s costume-party glam aesthetic isn’t all that far removed from the “Yo Gabba Gabba!” color explosion, so it’s a shame that they didn’t appear on the episode during which “Brush Brush Brush” aired. But the song itself, a lithe little disco-funk number, is about the danciest song you could imagine given the determinedly unsexy subject of dental health. Right-click to download it right here.

In more “Yo Gabba Gabba!” news, the show will premiere a run of new episodes during the week of October 12, and a ton of guests will stop by. Among them are Andy Samberg, the Roots, Lady Tigra, the Little Ones, show regulars Biz Markie and Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, and MGMT. MGMT will sing a song called “Art Is Everywhere”. Their appearance, in which they play narcotically grinning space vikings (seriously) is already on YouTube. So check it out below, via Stereogum.
