Film: This Is It
Genre: Documentary
Rating: PG

Stories in the news preceding Michael Jackson’s death may have given him a reputation he in no way deserves. He was, and forever will be, the King of Pop. This movie is the purest example of how he should be remembered. It is not surprising that this movie has grossed $21.3 million.

The movie depicts rehearsal and backstage footage of MJ during preparation for his sold-out London tour. It also includes interviews from tons of people involved in different aspects of the tour – back-up dancers, sound technicians, light technicians, members of the on-stage band, back up vocalists and more. Every person who was interviewed had such a passion for MJ – some were brought to the point of tears.

Shot at multiple locations, the film goes through the rehearsals of many songs and the steps they took to perfect it. A lot of the film really depicts MJ’s perfectionist side. He knew every minute detail of his music and wanted to make sure that everything was done perfectly for his fans.

The one thing that was mind-blowing from the start? His dancing. Everyone knows MJ can dance, but this movie really showcased his talent for singing and dancing. It was repeatedly said that it was what he loved to do. It was amazing that he was able to do this as well as he did, and even more amazing was something I had to remind myself constantly during the movie, he is 50 years old doing all of this.

Showcased in the movie were many of his songs which found the entire theater singing along. It also showed how the epic background videos were made. The one that stuck out the most was “Thriller”, which comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the 14-minute, 1983 music video – the 2009 version is absolutely amazing along with the live performance.

Whether you are a fan of Michael Jackson or not, he is the epitome of what a real musician is – and this film does an amazing job showing it. If you appreciate music, you will appreciate this film. I highly recommend paying a tribute to the King of Pop and seeing this great documentary.
