Review: Dang We’re on Fire – Heart Stopped Beating

Artist: Dang We’re on Fire
Album: Heart Stopped Beating
Genre: Pop Rock
Label: Self-released

Florida’s Dang We’re on Fire has been on my radar for quite some time. Their last EP was something of an oddity as it showed so much promise, but poor production and underdeveloped ideas plagued the band. Their new EP, Heart Stopped Beating just hit streets however and all those issues are nothing more than a thing of the past as the group has evolved into one of the most promising acts without a label in the scene today.

“Keep Your Head Up” comes blasting through the speakers with a Motion City vibe before turning to a Hit The Lights style verse and an All Time Low style hook. If that doesn’t excite you about this band I simply don’t know what will as that description should have pop rock fans everywhere frantically reaching for iTunes.

Continuing to rock along with pop laced melodies, the group finds a real voice on the titled track. Blending harmonies reminiscent of On Fire era The Higher, the group finds a solid groove on this track that screams for your attention. The youthful passion continues its power on the acoustic lead “Boston” that feels more radio ready than whatever ballad the Plain White T’s will be pushing next and has these awesome Western elements that really showcase the creative side of the group.

If that isn’t enough, the group packs a few more solid punches with “Why All of Your Friends Mean Nothing” and “East Coast vs. West Coast.” The only downside to these tracks however is that they are buried amongst some the generic chords of “Something San Diego” and the funky, yet underwhelming “Emotional Ridiculous” that simply feels like it needs a bit more work.

Having laid ground work with their debut Wake Up The Sleepers, Dang We’re on Fire have found their legs and started running on Heart Stopped Beating. While the group needs to work a bit more on developing some of their ideas, there’s little on the record to make anyone think this band shouldn’t be the next big thing.
