Review: Jason Derulo – Jason Derulo

Artist: Jason Derulo
Album: Jason Derulo
Genre: Pop/RnB
Label: Warner Bros.

Pop music has become such a vacuous segment of the music industry that I rarely care to deal with most the artists associated with the genre. Any music fan has an age when they realize how “hit” driven pop artist development is and that most albums produced by pop artists are filled with the big singles and a lot of filler and you wise up to the scheme. It’s this style of business that eventually lead to services like iTunes making bank off of selling singles. Now, pop stars really don’t need to worry about artistic integrity as they can cash in on their two singles and not even worry about a real record.

However, as in every genre, there are exceptions and Jason Derulo is a perfect example of what I mean. Throughout his 9 track self titled debut Derulo delivers again and again.

Riding the simply massive popularity of “Whatcha Say” and “In My Head,” Derulo’s record is the most impressive pop release since Justin Timberlake’s ambitious Futuresex/Lovesounds. Every track demands platinum selling status as they all showcase Derulo’s powerful vocals with undeniable orchestration and beats. There’s honestly not a single moment on the album that would fill one’s head with doubt in Derulo, it’s simply hit after hit.

I’m so confidant that Jason Derulo that I would wager all of UTG and everything I own that if “Riding Solo” is released to Top 40 and marketed correctly that it will be a top 5 song in 2010. Standout is an understatement as this song has every possible hit making element in it and it instantly transfers to anyone that stumbles upon it.

Jason Derulo’s self titled debut is, without a doubt, the most promising male solo pop release in years. Step aside J.T. and Usher, pop has a new king in the making.

Score: 9.5/10
