Single Review/Stream: Wiz Khalifa “Big Screen”

Artist: Wiz Khalifa
Song: “Big Screen”

Wiz Khalifa needs to take a second to breathe. Having risen from mixtape somebody to potential international rap star in the last six months (thanks mainly to “Black And Yellow”), I have no doubt in my mind his world has turned a complete 180. He’s gone from sleepless nights in the studio surrounded by his closest friends with no one to say no, to turning in verses and tracks to suits in preparation for his first label release and that’s what makes this time, more than ever before, a critical moment in Khalifa’s career. While his rep in the hip hop game is strong due to his irrefutable talent on the mixtape circuit, the wrong move with his debut label release could spell disaster (just ask Mike Posner).

Unfortunately, Khalifa’s latest track, “Big Screen,” gives fans little to excite them about the prospect of a new full length album. Everything about the track, from the laid back beat with light piano accompaniment, to the endless references to money, women, and weed, nothing about this track is new or groundbreaking for Khalifa. Well, that’s a bit of a lie. Khalifa does change things up with the most unnecessary use of autotune since whatever track Drake/Weezy/Young Money recorded last.

My question is this: What has changed Wiz? You used to bring us fresh wordplay and subject matter, but recently it’s all about money, weed, and girls. We get it, you love those things and now have them (in large amounts), but the rest of us, the ones who have dedicated our time and money to you, don’t. We’re still out here, grinding day to day, looking for music that helps us get through life as well as have a good time. Give us something we can play when we aren’t going to the club and need to make it to payday without losing our minds. Give us something to put on when our car is broke and the bills are due, but we still find the will to get up and carry on with life however we can.

Listen Wiz, I’m not saying you needs to be the voice of the people, but the people do need to relate to your voice. It’s not all parties and good times for 99.98% of us and it seems you’ve forgotten that as of late. Don’t wait for the bottom to fall out before you come to your senses. Stay in, lock the doors, put on the headphones, and give us something of value before you become another could-a-been with a catchy radio single.

Score: 3/10

We’re not “hatin.’ In fact, I think it’s safe to say the whole UTG staff considers themselves part of the “taylor gang.” That said, part of being a member of a gang/team is keeping one another in check. Having followed Wiz’s career for over a year, we’ve seen his capabilities as a rapper and this song falls FAR short of that. What kind of fans would we be if we loved everything he did and never gave criticism?

Regardless, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
