SINGLE REVIEW: Yellowcard – Hang You Up

Artist: Yellowcard
Song: Hang You Up
Album: When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes
Label: Hopeless

There’s few things I love more than a great pop song. Sure, there will always be a place in my heart for hip hop and total metal brutality, but that ability to keep things simple and catchy is something only a few can accomplish. That said, when such an artist and/or song presents itself, I feel like we have no choice but to highlight it on UTG even though it’s probably already gained a wide range of exposure. The latest example of this level of talent comes from one of the scene’s hardest working yet under-appreciated bands, Yellowcard.

Unlike many who may have strayed from the Yellowcard fanbase after their second album, Lights And Sounds, failed to impact like Ocean Avenue, I’ve done my best to stick by their side. It’s true their songwriting and style has changed slightly over the years, but that’s what happens when you grow, especially if you’re a true artist. Your experiences and outlook on life influences your art so doesn’t it make sense that every artist would eventually evolve? I’m not saying it’s always an evolution for the better, but it is an evolution (generally) brought on by the heart more than the demands of an industry and while fans may not always accept it, it’s necessary to maintain your own interest in your work. Yellowcard’s latest single, “Hang You Up,” is a perfect example of this phenomena and goes to show that change isn’t always a bad thing.

From the simple intro that soon leads to the instantly unforgettable line, “My hands are tired of just waiting to let go,” it takes absolutely no time to notice the maturity in Yellowcard’s sound. Gone are the quick, chord driven pop punk songs about young love and welcomed is a sense of comfort in themselves as a band that translates through each and every second of the track. I may be going out on a limb here, but this is without a doubt the best pop song I’ve heard this year. Forget Gaga and Beiber, THIS is music and THIS is what the people need to hear.

Stop buying into fads and songs that will be forgotten as soon as the season change. There is great music in the mainstream just waiting to be heard and Yellowcard’s “Hang You Up” is perhaps the most perfect example you could find. There’s heart, hook, and more passion than could be summarized in any amount of online ranting. So with that, let me encourage EVERYONE to click here and pick up this amazing track for yourself. Your ears and music collection will thank you.
