“Green Lantern” opens at number one, performs below expectations

Ryan Reynold’s portrayal of Hal Jordan in The Green Lantern claimed the crown at this weekend’s US box office. The film, adapted from the DC Comics character and series of the same name, brought in an estimated $52.7 million, which is a weaker figure than other recent comic films like X-Men: First Class (55.6mil) or Thor (65.7mil). Word is expectations for the film had put it in the $65-70mil range, but extreme panning from critics and poor word-of-mouth seems to have taken a toll.

Continuing the numbers, Super 8 remained popular enough among movie goers to land in second, raising its overall total to $72mil (surpassing the $50mil budge), while Jim Carrey’s work in Mr. Popper’s Penguins was family-friendly enough to land him a third place opening with $18mil.

The weekend, film lovers will be treated to the release of Cars 2, Bad Teacher, and Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop.
