David Wain considering “Wet Hot American Summer” prequel/sequel

Can you believe it has been ten years since Wet Hot American Summer was released? The camp-y comedy from director and comedy mastermind David Wain premiered at Sundance 2001 and later opened domestically to almost no audience (grossing only $300,000 theatrically). However, thanks to DVD sales, film geeks throwing theme parties, and torrents helped by word of mouth, the little film that went nowhere upon release has actually become one of the most successful cult films of all time. So where do we go from here? To the land of sequels and prequels of course!

In a recent interview with the Q&A Podcast, Wain was questioned about a sequel and responded:

Wain: Yes, we have been talking about a sequel, prequel, something or other.

Goldsmith: The idea I’ve heard tossed around is that it would be a prequel but when you shoot it they would be 20 years older.

Wain: Well, no that would be absurd. The prequel would be the same summer so they would be 20 years old for the part yeah, but not younger. So it would be 40 year olds playing 16 year olds. And yeah, we’re in the early stages of thinking about that.

Goldsmith: I hope it happens.

Wain: Me too.

While this doesn’t exactly promise more hilarity, it is a step in the right direction. Personally, I think Wain’s plot idea would be fantastic, especially if the original cast returned, but pulling in all those names (many of whom have since become giant stars) may be difficult.

For now, fans will have to rely on their trusty DVD, blu ray, and yes, even VHS copies of the film to get them by.
