“Deathly Hallows pt. 2” Grosses Record $90 Million-Plus On Friday

We all knew the final Harry Potter film would be huge, but no one expected this. Shattering, which is still putting it lightly, every previous single day total, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 grossed over $90 million on Friday.

For those interested, the previous record was The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which brought in a still insanely impressive $72.7 million single day haul during its initial debut in theaters.

This marks at least the second record this film has already broken, including biggest midnight haul with $43.5 million. Expectations are that Potter will have the biggest opening weekend of all time and execs at Warner, as well as JK Rowling and the entire cast, are already diving into their gold-plated swimming pools of champagne with excitement.

Any guesses on what Potter’s final three-day take will be? I’m going to say $191 million, but I could be selling it short.

Furthermore, who will overtake Potter? We have two more Twilight films, as well as the final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise due within the next year, so the battle could get heated.

As amazing as this news is, the tragedy at the end of the day is what this means for Warner Bros. and film in general. Moviegoers are feeding the machine that is “sequels” and taking us further and further away from true originality and dare i say, actual art.

Harry Potter is great and will still be great on Netflix in five months. Support an indie film this weekend and feed a family instead of filling a bank account.
