Queen to receive “Icon” status

At this year’s BMI London Awards on October 4, Queen will be honored as BMI Icons. Other artists and bands who have been deemed Icon-worthy by the organization in past years are Don Black, Van Morrison, Donovan, the Bee Gees, James Brown, Willie Nelson.

The status of Icon is awarded, according to BMI standards, to artists and songwriters who have had “a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” Judging by all the artists who tried to steal from Queen in some way or another (“Ice Ice Baby,” anyone?) I’d say this is a fairly accurate description.

All four members of Queen–Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon–have all received individual awards from BMI. Together, the band made history in 2003 when they were inducted into BMI’s Songwriters Hall of Fame as a group, rather than as individuals.
