Lou Reed brings Metallica guitarists to tears

Metal rockers Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield have collaborated with Lou Reed on the upcoming album, Lulu. It seems that, during the recording process, the lyrics in one of Reed’s songs caused the two guitarists, and members of Metallica, to sob. This news is not so much a jab at Hammett and Hetfield as it is a testament to the power of Reed’s lyrics.

The song that drew tears is called “Junior Dad,” and reached Hammett and Hetfield on personal levels. Hammett said that,

I had just lost my father literally three or four weeks previous. I had to run out of the control room, and I found myself standing in the kitchen, sobbing away.

Hetfield’s father left his family when he was 13, and was also affected by the lyrics. Hammett also commented that,

Lou managed to take out both guitar players in Metallica in one fell swoop, with his amazing poetic lyrics.

Lulu will be released October 31 in most of the world, and in America on November 1.
