“Contraband” Tops Friday Box Office

Opening Friday at 8.7 million Contraband, the action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg, leads the weekend box office. Behind it is the Disney 3D re-release of Beauty And The Beast, which grossed a modest 5.6 million on Friday night. Joyful Noise, the Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah church choir movie, barely edged out Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol with an opening of 3.3 million.

Contraband received mediocre reviews all across the board, but is entertaining enough for America to put it on the top of the box office. It’s projected to make 29 million over the whole weekend, which is a profit from the 25 million production budget. This proves once again that people enjoy that kid from Boston who always wants you to say hi to your mother for him, Mark Wahlberg, even if he never plays a different character.
