Kiss Planning Custom “Angry Birds” Game

This should not have come as a surprise, but it did. Kiss, the band whose logo and iconic faces have graced everything from pinball machines to condoms, are currently in talks to develop their own version of the hit mobile application Angry Birds.

Yes, you read that right. Kiss want to become Angry Birds.

NME brings us the story, which once again should not be a surprise given the amount of shameless branding the legendary band is known for, revealing frontman Gene Simmons spilled the beans in a recent interview with Industry Gamers. When discussing the project, Simmons commented:

We’re talking with Sony Games now,” he said. “We are really trying to take it in areas that haven’t been done before and have stayed out of the marketplace because the ideas simply weren’t exciting enough. So while the gaming world is waiting for the Kiss games that are going to explode, we’re busy taking the brand to places where no brand has gone before.”

Shortly after, Simmons included:

We’re talking with Angry Birds, Kiss and Angry Birds, which will become a deal.

As a twenty-something music writer with parents who love rock and only recently bought their first tablet device, I think it’s fair to label this as a pretty unnecessary product. That said, it does showcase once more that Gene Simmons is a relentless publicity whore and will stop at nothing to remain an aging-yet-notable member of the rock community for as long he lives. You gotta respect that, right?

What Simmons should do is consider consulting other artists on how to better market their careers. The rock of Kiss is timeless, but their need in the public forum is moot at this point, so why not give your vast well of knowledge to those trying to blaze new territory in the ridiculously overpopulated world of music? Simmons could remain relevant and the rest of us would actually benefit because new music, not just new product, would be released.
