Review: The Internet – Purple Naked Ladies

Artist: The Internet
Album: Purple Naked Ladies
Genre: Trip hip/Electronica/Soul
Label: Odd Future Records

The Internet, a hip-hop/soul duo, is a part of  the L.A. hip-hop collective, OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). The group is comprised of Syd Tha Kid-Odd Future’s sound engineer, audio mixer and DJ-on vocals and Matt Martian of Jet Age of Tomorrow on production. The duo’s debut album Purple Naked Ladies is also the first physical release for Odd Future Records. As an introduction to both The Internet and Odd Future Records, Purple Naked Ladies leaves something to be desired.

Sonically what Syd Tha Kid and Matt Martian have created is an electric mess, with each song following a similar formula throughout the entire album. There are two ways in which a song on Purple Naked Ladies could sound. The first way is highlighted on the opening track “Violet Nude Women.” The instrumentation for these songs is a blend of electronic loops that places emphasis on synth laden melodies that seem to have been borrowed from 70’s and 80’s.  These songs are rather hit-or-miss; with “Violet Nude Women” and “She Dgaf,” being two of the more successful tracks, while “Lincoln” and “Cunt,” are two of the more obvious misses.

The other way is best highlighted in “She Knows.” The instrumentation for these tracks places greater emphasis upon the rhythm section, adding either a sparse guitar riff or synth effects. These are the tracks on the album that are far more successful and stand out as being enjoyable.

While Purple Naked Ladies may not have been the strongest or most successful of introductions it contains moments that promise that something exceptional and worthwhile is up head for both the band and Odd Future.

Score: 6/10
