UTG INTERVIEW: Larry G(ee)

Earlier today, Texas native Larry G(ee) was announced as the latest artist to join this Summer’s Warped Tour. Boasting a sound that blends contemporary pop with the big band energy of years gone by, his future is brighter than ever and this Summer could be just what he needs to breakout. To celebrate his accomplishment, as well as catch up for the first time since December, we spoke with Larry about Warped, the events since his album release, and what he’s looking forward to later in the year. You can read the complete interview below. To discover which dates of Warped Tour Larry will be on, click here.

It has been nearly half a year since the release of WEEKENDS. How have things changed since we last spoke in December?

Larry: The response from the release has led to a lot of great opportunities. In January I flew out to NY to play S.O.B.’s “Sol Village Showcase” and work the album with various industry people. It was a lot of fun but a great learning experience as well.

You recently performed (a lot) at SXSW in Austin, TX. As an unsigned artist trying to develop a presence in the music industry, how would you summarize the week? Was the exposure worth the expense?

Larry: From performing on the Austin City Limits Live stage, to the showcases, to the various meetings taken, I would have to say we made the most of our time in Austin. There wasn’t one day lost from working this project. I’d say it was a success.

I would ask about your future tour plans, but earlier today we learned you’re going to be on this Summer’s Warped Tour. How did this opportunity develop?

Larry: I entered a contest through OurStage.com. It’s a great platform for unsigned artist’s to put their music out there and get discovered. Winning this tour is an honest example of just that. I thankful for the opportunity to the people that voted me in and OurStage. This is huge!!

Your sound is definitely unique enough to standout at Warped Tour, but it’s also far from the punk edge most associate with the festival. Do you see the difference as an advantage or challenge? Why?

Larry: I honestly see this as opportunity to introduce a completely different sound to fresh ears. We’re (my band and I) are looking forward to giving the audience and the best show possible. Hate it or love it, they’re going to hear us loud and clear.

Outside of Warped, what do you have on the horizon? Any chance of new music later this year?

Larry: Definitely new music on the horizon. When you manage your own career like I’ve been doing, you typically get caught up in the marketing aspect side of things so much that you forget about the music as a whole. After the release I kind of had a moment where I could take a little break and gather my creative thoughts. I can’t wait to share what’s brewing in head for part 2 of this journey.

Before we let you go, any final thoughts?

Because the OurStage announcement was just made today, I’ve just got a lot of gratitude towards everyone who has been a part or supported this project. We’re a like a family and I’m just stoked to be able to share this with them. Having people who really believe in you and support make it easier for someone like me to keep on going. We’re just getting started.
