REVIEW: Mixtapes – Somewhere In Trinsic 7″

Artist: Mixtapes
Album: Somewhere In Trinsic
Genre: Pop-Punk/Punk
Label: No Sleep

Mixtapes is a very fun band. I’ve been listening to them for a while now, and their simply infectious and catchy version of pop-punk has been in my headphones on repeat whenever I need a quick pick-me-up. I’ve been painfully waiting for Mixtapes’ debut full length which comes out next month, so getting a 7inch while I wait makes me satisfied (and a happy record collector). So here’s a quick rundown of the three songs on the very fun 7inch Somewhere In Trinsic.

“Even on the Worst Nights” is bound to be a wild rompus (yeah I literally just wrote wild rompus) at their live shows. The song is easy, fun, but perfect for chanting along with your best friends and a sprite in hand (Sprite’s my straight edge drink of choice).  Mixtapes doesn’t deviate from their bare bones essentials in their instrumentation, and they definitely keep that tongue in cheek but brutally honest lyricism that I’ve really come to love.

“All The Mistakes We Make” (Are Gonna Lead to All the Important Things We’re Gonna Do) is a slower song, but still keeping a pretty moderate pace.  Lyrically they continue with themes of doing their own thing as they hang out, talk shit on people but then getting real and opening up to the people they care about. I always relate to this band a lot because of their tongue in cheek awkwardness that they have.

“P.E.T. S.O.U.N.D.S.” rounds off the end of the 7inch with a fast song that utilizes Maura more than the previous more Ryan-cnetric songs, and of course I love it. I’m a sucker for good female vocalists, and I love how honest  and straight to the point she sounds. Sometimes with female vocalists they try to like some gospel singer going all over the place (pro-tip, you can’t do it), but Maura knows her range, sings with conviction, and I can really appreciate that. This is a really fun one to listen to in your car or if you want a quick jumpstart to your morning.

All in all, Somewhere In Trinsic is a really fun 7inch that does the job it set out to do: make you excited about the full length arriving in June. Mixtapes is going to be the sound of my summer for many, so listen to these tracks while you can in order to prevent looking like a n00b when the band is plastered everywhere in a few weeks.
