MUSIC HISTORY CLASS: Emo Elopes

History Lesson

On this day in 2008, pop-starlet Ashley Simpson and emo-figurehead Pete Wentz got married. The ceremony took place at the Simpson’s home in Encinco, California and was officiated by Simpson’s father. Two weeks later, Simpson and Wentz announced that they were going to have their first child. On 20 November 2008, a baby boy named Bronx Mowgli Wentz was born. After several years of family life, the star couple began to grow apart. On 8 February 2011, Simpson filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences.” Wentz would later explain to People Magazine that the divorce “…was honestly a classic case of marrying young, having a kid young and growing apart over the years.” Is that not what they all say?

The marriage between Ashley Simpson and Pete Wentz was a shocker to many fans of Wentz’ band, Fall Out Boy. As bassist and primary songwriter, Wentz was the poster-child for millennial emo’s. Ashley, the notorious back-up-tape-singer, is the younger sister of Jessica Simpson. Perhaps nothing screamed “Pete has made it to the big time!” louder than his relationship with Simpson. Instead of being known as the awkward bassist of Fall Out Boy, Wentz became known as Ashley Simpson’s hubby; a label he never seemed to grow into. There divorce may have not been inevitable, but it sure was not a surprise.
