Rest In Peace: Maurice D. Davis

The UTG staff has learned that legendary Funk Brothers trumpet player Maurice D. Davis passed away on July 13 from unknown causes. Davis played on recordings by or toured with the likes of the Supremes, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, and the Temptations.

He was featured om over 1,500 recordings, including the classic “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.” Davis also played with artists such as Tony Bennett, Whitney Houston, Sammy Davis Jr., Dizzy Gillespie, and many more. In 2002, he was featured in the acclaimed documentary about the Funk Brothers, called Standing In The Shadows of Motown, which we highly recommend checking out.

On top of all of his musical success, Davis taught at Michigan’s own Wayne State University from 1980 to 1995 and was an ordained minister. UTG sends out our prayers to the family and friends of Maurice D. Davis.
