The First Trailer For “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” Has Arrived

January is typically a dumping grounds for films studios feel are “risky” or downright bad. A few gems have surfaced over the years, such as the inexplicable success of Paul Blart, but as a whole this month is more or less a wasteland for films that would never stand a chance if release during peak movie-going season (ie, Spring/Summer/Fall). All that considered, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, doesn’t look as bad as its release date would likely lead you to believe. The film was delayed more than once, but now has a cemented street date thanks to lead actor Jeremy Renner’s high profile success in The Avengers and Bourne Legacy. The film’s official synopsis reads as follows:

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters takes place 15 years after the siblings’ incident at the gingerbread house. The two are now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set.”

The first international trailer for the film is now available for viewing, and from what I see there is subtle Army of Darkness vibe to everything we’re shown. There is a surprising lack of humor, which leads me to fear another Van Helsing may be the end result, but it’s likely too early to judge. You can view the trailer below.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens January 11.
