Beck’s Next Release to be Book of Sheet Music

Famed alt rocker Beck Hansen, who has done things as various as rap with Childish Gambino, work on the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack, and be a cool guy with Jack White, has taken another unusual turn with his next planned release.

Song Reader will be his next release of new music, only you won’t be able to hear Beck play any of the songs. It is a book of sheet music, featuring 20 new songs written by Beck. It has an introduction by Jody Rosen of the New York Times and a preface by Beck himself. You can pre-order Song Reader, to be released on December 7, here.

UTG has mixed feelings on this. Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and the like pioneered the way of pay-what-you-want downloads that bandcamp has turned into a common act, but Beck seems to have gone another step. What do you think of this unusual method of releasing music?

I finished school with a music theory degree. Before I finished school, I was a janitor. You really should apologize to all the janitors you've ever had. You hurt them. Seriously. You did.

But, now that we've cleared that up and you called your high school janitor, know that I quit being a janitor to pursue writing about music. So here I am, and here you are, and hey how are you?
