Former heavy metal and current Rick Rubin act Metallica have gone independent (maybe blink 182 will do the same?). They have formally announced they have started their own label – although they haven’t said if the still untitled label will be signing other acts, or just being used as a means to release their new material.
They’ll be kicking off their independence with a concert release on DVD and Blu Ray. It was filmed for the Death Magnetic Tour and will be released on December 10. The band stated “There are still some i’s [sic] being dotted and t’s [sic again – learn grammar, Lars] crossed, so we can’t give you a name or fancy logo just yet, but we’re pretty excited that for the first time we get to hold all the reins on a release from start to finish. Since we now get to call all the shots, the double DVD and single disc Blu-ray will be available for a price we thought was very Metallica fan friendly – suggested retail will be $15.98 for either format.” Hopefully that holds true – sixteen bucks is fairly cheap for any new release blu ray or double disc DVD.
Is this a sign that every major act will now be starting their own indie label, or just Metallica making another Lulu mistake? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I think it is a great idea as long as they sign other acts :D
