Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it’s been too too long.

It appears that the NYC-based indie rock trio is lumbering their way back into activity. Back in November, LA radio station KCRW broke the news that the group was gearing up for their as yet untitled fourth album, and their first since 2009’s It’s Blitz, for release some time in early 2013, and we’re beginning to hear the fruits of the group’s sonic labor.

The crowd in attendance at Brooklyn’s Union Pool were in for a special treat when Yeah Yeah Yeahs gave “Despair” its live debut. SPIN was there to cover the concert, a benefit show raising money for the non-profit Waves 4 Water and Hurricane Sandy victims.

While they weren’t able to score any audio of the set, writer Caryn Ganz provided a fairly fleshed out description of the new cut: ‘ “Despair,” a spare thumper that recalled Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” with Karen O singing about wasted days, nights, years, life. ‘ Sounds fun! And it was also Nick Zinner’s birthday that night too! Double fun!

Video of “Despair” hasn’t shown up online yet but we’ll update if and when it does. But Karen O and co. did roll through “Maps,”  that night, and that song never gets old. Check out footage of that slice of 8th grade below.
