Before we dig into this one, keep in mind the only sources so far are The Guardian and The Sun, both of whom have a questionable history when it comes to these kind of so-called exclusives.
Rumor on the internet this morning is that Sir Paul McCartney will be joining the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic – for a one time reunion at Madison Square Garden tonight as part of a Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. This would be the first time any form of Nirvana has performed on stage in twenty years, and to be honest I’m having a really hard time believing this is going to be a real thing, but a rep for Grohl confirmed that McCartney was recently asked to “jam with some mates” and now everyone is losing their minds.
This is where the story goes from hard to believe, to almost impossible. Both the Guardian and Sun are quoting McCartney as saying:
I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Neither article sites a source for these quotes, nor a time or place where they were recorded, but they chose to ran them anyways and now here we are with more questions than answers.
Unless someone representing one of the people involved releases a statement, it seems we’ll only know if this is real by following the 12/12/12 Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. Click here to learn more about the event, and stay tuned to UTG for more updates on this developing story.
