Paul McCartney Performs With Nirvana Members At Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert, Records Song For Grohl’s ‘Sound City’ Documentary

Take a second to absorb that lengthy headline. It’s a lot to think about.

Featuring artists like the “Piano Man” Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Chris Martin of Coldplay with Michael Stipe of REM, Wednesday’s 12/12/12 Concert For Sandy Relief was a massive success which not only resulted in a ton of money raised from donations toward relief efforts but more complaints about Kanye West’s attire than Hurricane Sandy itself. As you can see from the link, he wore some form of leather skirt which matched his performance in atrocity value.

Anyway, early yesterday, we posted the rumors about something exciting regarding the benefit event, and sure enough, one of the biggest highlights of the night came in the form of a Nirvana reunion fronted not by a Kurt Cobain hologram, but Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of The Beatles – with original drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist, Pat Smear – in which they performed a new song entitled, “Cut Me Some Slack.” As you could imagine, the performance/song were fantastic. If that wasn’t music-nerd-boner-worthy enough, it appears that the group recorded the song (apparently about 6 months ago according to Grohl) and it will be featured in Dave Grohl’s upcoming documentary, Sound City, and on the album, Sound City – Real to Reel which contains music from the film.

Prior to the performance, more rumors ran wild as Grohl tweeted ransom-note-like photos of letters from his Sound City Movie Twitter account which eventually spelled out “Cut Me Some Slack.” Post performance, in an interview with Fuse, Grohl said, “When I first called Paul to see if he’d come jam with us, none of us wanted to do a Beatles song or a Nirvana song; we wanted to do a new song. So we wrote and recorded a new song in a day and it’s heavy as fuck!”

After the jump you can watch the historical performance and the aforementioned short interview with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic via Fuse.

We’re seriously running out of rock icons for Dave Grohl to play with.
