Tragedy has struck the hip-hop community this holiday season. It is being reported that rapper Capital STEEZ, born Jamal Dewar, has passed away today at the age of 19.

News of Dewar’s death was reported and confirmed via a series of tweets from various members of the Pro Era hip-hop collective, of which STEEZ was a member. “This unfortunate xmas eve.. Lost a best friend, a brother, a pro, a partner,” tweeted Joey Bada$$ early this morning. “Letting go is never easy.. May ur soul rest in peace Jamal..”

Circumstances regarding Dewar’s passing remain unclear. It should be noted that Dewar tweeted, “The end” at 8:59 pm on December 23rd, though the context and intent of the message is unknown.

Dewar initially rose to prominence after featuring on Joey Bada$$’s breakout track “Survival Tactics”. Dewar later distinguished himself as a solo performer in his own right, releasing the AmeriKKKan Korruption mixtape this past April. Most recently Dewar appeared on Pro Era’s mixtape PEEP: the aPROcalypse which was released this past Friday.

Dewar, bursting with a level of talent that belied his age and experience, impressed with his fiery delivery and dense, informed lyricism. He has left this world far too soon. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Dewar family and to Pro Era at this time.
