25 Days Of Metal 2012: #1 Gojira – L’Enfant Sauvage

Rather than counting down the days until we can celebrate Christmas, this year we’re bringing you a series of metal posts will be celebrating the countdown until we don’t have to be inundated with Christmas music and decorations everywhere. To coincide with this countdown we’ll be posting our top 25 metal (and metal-ish) albums of 2012. 25 days of hell, 25 rad metal albums to make up for it.

If you’ve been following my posts on Under The Gun Review for the last six or so months, my number one choice should come as no surprise after my glowing review of the album. Gojira‘s L’Enfant Sauvage is pretty clearly the pinnacle of the band’s near-perfect career thus far and genuinely feels like the perfect culmination of each of their distinctly different albums leading up to it. Jean-Michel Labadie and Mario Duplantier have fused into one massive, rhythmic powerhouse to perfectly complement Christian Andreu and Joe Duplantier’s dual guitar riff attack, all topped off by Joe’s incredibly emotive screams. An array of songs displaying the band’s supreme technical prowess contrasted in perfect balance by their msaterful songwriting make L’Enfant Sauvage the most memorably pleasurable metal album of the year. Metal giants Gojira have done it again.

  1. “pinnacle of the band’s near-perfect career” – I disagree, this can’t be their Pinnacle. Although I think this album kicks some serious ass, it’s fairly weak compared to their past. I also feel this album isn’t quite a masterpiece such as their previous works like “From Mars To Sirius” and “The way of All Flesh.” – To me, “From Mars..” is their pinnacle. The creativeness, backdrop, heaviness, musicianship; everything in that album is Golden.
