REVIEW: Mutt’s Company – ‘Jump Ship EP’

Artist: Mutt’s Company
Album: Jump Ship EP
Genre: Rock
For fans of: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Oasis

With the exception of few bands that still have what it takes to pull it off, pure undeviating rock and roll seems to be somewhat of a rarity in this day and age. There’s always some new sub-genre or phase that surfaces and floats along for a short while until it finally loses its steam and sinks below the surface never to breach it again. What we’re inevitably left with is the purest form. The crystal blue. The unblemished soul of good old fashioned rock and roll.

Copenhagen, Denmark’s Mutt’s Company may not necessarily grace the walls and archives of a certain historic Cleveland based museum years down the line, but they have an appealing retro simplicity and endowment in their sound that clamorously conveys their goal as a rock outfit.

Having been together for merely a year now, this ambitious quartet have already released their debut EP, Jump Ship, produced by Anders Norddal Jendresen at Duck-Sound Productions, and featuring six soaring tracks spanning a 26-minute runtime. Despite the aforementioned themes and indications of this being an unclouded rock record, don’t let that deter you with thinking that it’s boring in any form as it does in fact contain variety with acoustic endeavors and truly soulful vocal approaches. Efforts such as the opener and title track, as well as the EP’s fourth offering, “Bad Diet,” display the band’s abilities in the straight-forward rock category while “Winterworn” shows the genuine conviction this group is capable of, being its longest and most heartfelt number as vocalist Rasmus Nielsen really lays it out with meaning.

Mutt’s Company have a solid vehicle here and as long as they don’t jump ship themselves, their ship could see quite the journey with further growth and dedication. Even though their debut is just a morsel overall, I’m interested to see what they expand on with future efforts. With such youth in the group, they have plenty of time to do so.

SCORE: 7.5/10
