Stone Temple Pilots Have “Officially Terminated” Lead Singer Scott Weiland

Sounds like someone didn’t have a great performance review last quarter.

USA Today is reporting that 90s grunge survivors Stone Temple Pilots have fired lead singer and frontman Scott Weiland.

Word of Weiland’s removal from the band came from a one sentence press release from band publicist Kymm Britton.

Britton: “Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland.”

…and that’s it. Weiland has had a tempestuous relationship with other members of Stone Temple Pilots over the years. In 2002, following an on-stage altercation between Weiland and guitarist Dean DeLeo, the band halted activity. While Weiland would continue to work on his solo efforts and would later front the super group Velvet Revolver, guitarist DeLeo stopped short of calling the implosion of the band a “break up”.

It appears that this might have been brewing for some time. Back in December, guitarist Slash, one of Weiland’s bandmates in Velvet Revolver, stated in an interview with Minneapolis, MN radio station 93X that Weiland had been fired from Stone Temple Pilots. The audio from the interview can be found here.

Stone Temple Pilot’s last release was their 2010 self-titled effort. We’ll continue to report on this story as it develops.
