Billie Joe Armstrong Talks Substance Abuse, Recovery In Rolling Stone Interview

Green Day front man and songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong recently sat down with David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine to dish about his substance abuse and subsequent recovery.

It’s a fairly incredible story, if only for the fact that there really wasn’t any public indications of Armstrong’s issues prior to his outburst at back in September at the iheartradio Festival in Las Vegas. But Armstrong delves pretty deep into some of the more harrowing behind the scenes moments.

“I couldn’t predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night,” he tells Rolling Stone senior writer David Fricke. “I’d wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn’t remember how. It was a complete blackout.”

Also, regarding his iheartradio meltdown, it appears that Armstrong remembers very little of his now infamous outburst.

“I remember tiny things,” Armstrong says of the Vegas incident. “The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, ‘How bad was it?’ She said, ‘It’s bad.’ I called my manager. He said, ‘You’re getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.'”

Glad to hear you’re doing better Billie Joe. The full interview will be available in print when the next issue of Rolling Stone goes on sale this Friday.
