Vinyl purchasing is on the rise in the industry. However it never really died. Celebrated since 2007, Record Store Day is a day in April (2013 will celebrate on April 20) where fans celebrate their local record shops by purchasing records. While I am of the strict belief that every day is record store day, this special day does have something fun to offer collectors: limited vinyl. Today at UTG we are excited to share with you a list (which I’m sure will get updated).

Labels work together with their artists to bring limited, repressed, and unreleased material to wax, and then they are sold (almost) exclusively through local record stores. Record Store Day is a great way to bring attention to your local record store, and it helps to bring out fans who aren’t completely sold on purchasing music on vinyl.

That being said, here at UTG we strongly encourage our readers to check out their local shop on all days of the year, not just the one day that is dedicated to vinyl purchasing. Most of the time record shops struggle just to pay the rent, but they continue to stay open because they love what they do. Some of my personal favorites include Rainbow Records in Delaware (my store growing up), Vinyl Conflict in Richmond, VA (one of the best punk and hardcore stores I’ve ever been too), Smash! Records in DC, and Joe’s Record Paradise in Silver Spring, MD (biggest collection that I’ve seen). Try a new store, support your favorites, and enjoy the company of like-minded fans of music.
