NOT A JOKE: Love ‘Cars’? Here’s Your First Look At Disney’s ‘Planes’

You know a spinoff film is destined for greatness when one of the companies behind the original is no longer involved, nor any of the original cast, and the release was bumped from Direct-To-DVD to theatrical. Such is the case with Disney’s upcoming animated feature, Planes.

Made without the help of Pixar, who famously saw a dip in their popularity with the release of Cars, Disney’s Planes hopes to kickstart a new franchise (aka vehicle for toy sales) that will take everyone’s love of talking machinery to the skies. The film was originally scheduled to arrive Direct-To-DVD in the Fall, but it was recently announced the film will now debut theatrically on August 9, 2013. The film features the voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, and Carlos Alazraqui. The plot is as follows:

The story centers on Dusty’s (Cook) dream of competing as a high-flying air race. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing, so he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Don’t think Disney is going to let this talking vehicle idea stop with this film. Planes 2: Fire and Rescue is already in development and will likely hit theaters sometime next year.

  1. I know the theater snobs want more moves like WALLE but kids don’t. Pixar may have lot street cred for the cars films but between ticket sales and merchandise Cars was a serious money maker. And much more fun to watch than some of the more critically acclaimed films, especially if you hare a 6 or 7 year old boy (and let’s face it that is the target market. As a parent Cars is big business in our house. I did have my college students write a paper on the movie WALLE and the themes the movie address, but my 6 year old has never sat through it he gets bored and frankly for all the fuss about Nemo I liked Cars much better; it was more fun!

Sounds like a very weak plot. And no Pixar…this will be a fail.

  3. Muppetfan says:

That is not entirely true. John Lasseter (director of the Cars movies, and chief creative officer of both Pixar and Disney Animation) is one of the producers of Planes.

“Made without the help of Pixar,”

Not true, John Lasseter (director of Cars, Cars 2, and chief creative officer of BOTH Pixar and Disney animation) will be one of the producers of Planes. He has a lot of input.
