MOVIE REVIEW: My Amityville Horror

Movie: My Amityville Horror
Director/Writer: Eric Walter
Studio: Film Regions International, Lost Witness Pictures

It would be hard to exist in this country (maybe even the whole world) and not have at least heard of The Amityville Horror. Be it the books, the movies, or the TV shows, by now the name should at least ring a bell. To briefly summarize and recap, the Lutz family moved in to an upstate New York house where a mysterious mass murder occurred many years prior. Soon the Lutz family started to experience paranormal phenomenon and left the house after 28 days. Eventually a book was published about their experience and they became (more or less) pop culture icons. Ten films later and here we are with My Amityville Horror, a documentary focusing on the oldest of the Lutz children, Danny, and his side of the story.

The biggest question on most people’s minds about the Amityville incident are whether or not it really happened. With all of the media claiming it to be a true story and a real haunting (or demon involvement or what have you) it has become surrounded in conspiracy theories and outright doubt. This documentary is not going to clear any of that up, but after watching it you will see that Danny Lutz definitely believes something supernatural happened, and it has affected him his entire life. This is not so much a documentary about the house or the haunting as it is a look inside of Daniel Lutz’s mind, and what you find is both interesting and a bit heartbreaking.

My Amityville Horror is a well crafted film. It is shot and edited wonderfully and will certainly keep you entertained throughout it’s runtime. A documentary’s job is to tell a story and this film does that wonderfully. Interviews and interactions with people close to the incident and Danny keep things from getting stale and add an extra layer to an already rich narrative. Eric Walter never shies away from tougher questions despite Danny’s reactions (which were sometimes angry and intense) so you get a the full story, no holds barred.

If you have ever seen one of the Amityville movies or have any interest in the incident whatsoever make sure you see My Amityville Horror. It is a great look into the mind of someone that was actually there and the affect it has had on his mind and his life. You can check it out now before it hits theaters on VOD, so there is nothing stopping you from watching this great addition to the Amityville mythos.
