Gru Tries To Be Good in The New Trailer For ‘Despicable Me 2’

Animated films used to be a completely different ballgame in terms of creation, marketing, and release. In the past, studios would strive to craft animated features with the hopes of creating modern classics that would be loved (ie bought/supported) for generations to come. Today, however, the focus has shifted from creating something timeless to something good enough to be repeated for as long as the money keeps rolling in. Sometimes this works out well (Toy Story 3), other times it falls flat (Cars 2), and for the life of me I cannot decide which of these two headings Despicable Me 2 will fall under. On the one hand, there is absolutely no reason to bring back Gru, the girls, and the minions other than to cash in on toy sales and parents hoping for something family friendly at the box office, but on the other hand the latest trailer leaves you wanting more. Justified? Maybe not. But it’s something worth previewing nonetheless.

Hitting theaters July 3, Despicable Me 2 finds Gru (Steve Carrell) facing off with a new nemesis voiced by Al Pacino. The new trailer teases this while backed by Eminem’s “Without Me” as fans see Gru getting kidnapped by Agent Lucy Wilde of the Anti-Villain League. Gru believes his reign of evil has come to an end, but later finds out that the league is recruiting him to fend off a new unnamed evildoer that has surfaced. You can view the trailer below.

Despicable Me 2 will have a cushy seat at the box office when it opens, with little direct competition based on the current release schedule. Do you plan to see DM2 in theaters? Comment below and let us know if the return of the minions is enough to earn your time and money!
