If there is one MC the UTG staff is waiting to see explode in 2013 it’s Detroit native Danny Brown. 2012 found the MC making appearances alongside seemingly every major name in the freshman class of mainstream hip hop, and thus far in 2013 he’s only delivered hits. Today another new song appeared on the rapper’s Soundcloud, and once again we’re left praising the ever peculiar talent of Danny Brown.
Produced by rising producer Trampy and inspired by Diplo/Major Lazer, “Be Yourself” features Brown going in with bar after bar about his life of women, drugs, and insanity. It’s lyrically well within Brown’s wheelhouse, but his flow and approach feel fresher than ever. He attacks the beat and delivers lines until you fear he will collapse from lack of breath. It’s exciting, invigorating, and exactly what hip hop needs right now. You can stream the song at the end of this post.
It will take a few additional spins to know for sure, but I am going to out on a limb and say “Be Yourself” is the best Danny Brown song to surface in 2013. Comment below and let us know if you agree!
