Nineteen years ago today the world lost Kurt Donald Cobain, frontman of legendary grunge act Nirvana. Cobain chose to take his own life from inside his Seattle home, and every year on this day fans around the world remember his contributions to the world by listening to his music, reading his journals, and (in the modern age) discussing his legacy on social networks. One Seattle newspaper is getting in on the memories as well by releasing previously unpublished photos from the the suicide scene, and it’s a decision that is sure to stir the emotions of many.
Published online earlier today by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the photos captured by Mike Urban and Phil Webber showcase a scene filled with mourning and confusion. You can see the coroner come and go, police discussing the incident outside Cobain’s home, and throngs of onlookers impatiently awaiting details about the frontman’s fate. I think we have managed to make a post remembering Cobain on this date throughout every year of UTG’s existence and I see no reason why we would ever stop. The impact Cobain had on the world deserves to never be forgotten, even long after the rest of have passed, and we intend to make sure that happens.
Rest in peace, Kurt. You are missed.
