UTG PHOTOS: THE ROCKET SUMMER (3/31/13)

Under The Gun sent Head of Photography, Kellie Gannon, to the Rocket Summer Tour on March 31, 2013 in Cleveland.

The Rocket Summer has always been a band that has held a huge, gigantic spot in my heart, mostly for nostalgic reasons. I’ve had the opportunity to see TRS live on several occasions over the years, but never had the opportunity to shoot any of the shows. Exactly ten years after the release of “Calendar Days” and ten years after my ears first heard the sweet, sweet sounds of Bryce Avary’s soulful, happy voice, I had the opportunity to shoot this show. And I couldn’t be happier! The Rocket Summer descended on Peabody’s in Cleveland on March 31, coincidentally falling on Easter.  With support from Royal Teeth and Joe Brooks, it was an excellent show all around, and the best Easter I think I’ve ever had.

Joe Brooks took the stage with a cute English accent and soulful tunes, automatically making the ladies in the crowd swoon. The set was short and sweet and Brooks rejoined Bryce onstage along with Royal Teeth during The Rocket Summer‘s set for a soulful rendition of “Walls” (video below).

Bryce took the stage while beat boxing, leading into “Of Men and Angels” off his fourth studio album of the same name.  Mid-set, he jumped offstage to play guitar and sing amongst the crowd in between hits like “Brat Pack,” “Do You Feel,” and “Around The Clock.” After an hour and a half set, The Rocket Summer finished strong with an extensive encore and Bryce crowd surfing while playing guitar during their final song of the night “So, In This Hour.” And anyone who is a Rocket Summer fan knows that Bryce is the most caring, down to earth musician and he once again proved it by bringing a fan onstage mid-set and presenting her with a cake to commemorate the 150th Rocket Summer show she has attended. So ten years after I was first introduced to “Calendar Days” I must admit that  Bryce is still rocking, better and happier than ever, and looking forward to a (hopefully!) sixth album in the future from this brilliant, talented man. Enjoy all the photos from this show below!
