Chi Cheng, Deftones Bassist Passes Away

We have some sad news to report tonight: it seems that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has passed away.

After a car accident in Santa Clara, CA back in 2008, Chi suffered major injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. This accident left Cheng in a coma.

In 2010, the musician showed improvement, responding to commands and moving his legs. After showing more signs of rehabilitation, he was moved to his home for recovery.

Cheng died last night at 3am in the hospital. His family left the following note on a charity website made for him, Oneloveforchi.com.

“Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency [sic] room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

With great love and “Much Respect!” Mom J (and Chi)”

This is, of course, very sad news and we send our condolences to his family, friends, and band mates.

Wow, always hoped this dude would make a comeback…sounds like he battled till the very end. RIP Chi.

  36. Accidents happen. My husband died in 2008, he was trapped by his seat belt and burned alive. It generally DOES SAVE people’s lives but in some cases it has hindered people from getting rescued.

  37. Laurie Lynn says:

Blessing to all of Chi’s family and friends. He is in Paradise now, playing for everyone there. His music will always live on. Chi may you be in peace.

  38. Rock in piece, brother Chi! All of your fans will miss you!

  39. Laurie Lynn says:

Seat belt or not, it means when your numbers up, it’s up. And there is nothing you or anyone can do about it.

  40. me says:

To cool to wear a Seatbelt…

  41. Non-Specific Action Figure says:

I heard about this and I went “Oh my God!” out-loud.

We lost an amazing talent today. I admit that I haven’t really followed the band over the years, but I could definitely hear the sheer musicianship that they all possessed.

I remember my first time listening to Chi and I actually exclaimed out-loud that the bass sounded awesome in the song. Bass is usually there just for that low-end, but Chi was able to do so much more.

He just had an amazing ability to play his instrument that I just couldn’t help but notice.

Rest in peace, you amazing, amazing man. We’ll miss you.
