TUBULAR: UTG Has a Pop Music Crush on Betty Who

The term “throwback sound” is thrown around a lot these days, and more often than not it is used to refer to the big band and/or soul pop era of music. While we will always welcome artists new and old pushing that sound, this young talent with an old school sound is channeling a much different era: The 80s.

Hailing from Australia, Betty Who is a twenty-something pop songstress with enough blog buzz to be considered (at least) Tumblr famous. Her short blonde hair and seemingly endless abundance of joyful personality burst from every second of her debut EP, The Movement, as well as its accompanying videos. Her lead single, “Somebody Loves You,” showcases her musical infatuation with the brightest moments of female-lead pop in the 80s, with splashes of modern nuances to give things a little twist of confectionery music goodness. It’s a gateway for the rest the EP, but it’s also a damn good single in its own right. The kind of song that makes you wish you could start a brilliantly choreographed dance routine throughout the cubicles in your office, or launch into a costumed routine through the halls of your high school, that’s the kind of song “Somebody Loves You” is and it’s exactly what you need to kickstart this new week.

As for the rest of The Movement, listeners can expect an experience second to none. The 80s zeal of “Somebody Loves You” runs throughout the EP, with every song sounding different yet stunningly cohesive. The ballad, “Right Here,” is a real highlight as Betty’s vocals are pushed front and center against a minimalistic accompaniment that permeates through the air with soulful atmosphere. It’s the softest point on the album, but it’s also one that leaves the strongest impression on the listener. We’ll be reviewing the release in full in the coming weeks, but for now you can stream and download The Movement after watching the video for “Somebody Loves You” below.

More importantly, click the share icons at the end of this post and tell more people about her music! We’re hoping Betty will bring her tubular sound to the states soon, but for now the EP will have to do. We’ll bring you updates on Betty’s plans to takeover music as more information becomes available.
