EDITORIAL: Pryde and Prejudice. A Morals and Orals Quarrel

Noisey columnist, Kitty Pryde, has taken the stand in defense of her friend and current tour mate, Danny Brown, on account of “The Thing,” an incident that took place on stage at one of their shows in Minneapolis on Friday, April 26. Danny Brown reportedly had his pants pulled down by a woman in the crowd that then began to perform oral sex on him. Pryde argues that Detroit-based nasty lyricist, Danny Brown, basically had no options but to let this woman do her thing because if he had done something about it, even a gentle push away, he would’ve been shed in a negative, abusive light.

Look, if you want to snort controlled substances out of some sloot’s asscrack with a crazy straw, by all means, be my guest, but that shit is left to the after party in the hotel room. Getting polished in front of 700 people or any act of the sort aren’t occurrences that should be taking place on stage. Fans are paying to see you perform, not to see fans perform on you. I’m not saying this is entirely Brown’s fault. No one said he invited this chick to tickle his tip with her uvula but as forums are flooded with “reports” stating that Danny tweeted, “didn’t miss one bar bruh bruh,” and one leaked incriminating photo clearly shows Brown’s hand on the back of the violator’s head, it’s hard to believe that this was all assault with no consent. The real kicker, though, is this video which clearly shows the act in progress with no struggle or apparent refusal from Brown for a good 15 seconds or so. To some, a 15-second blowy is a lifetime worth of brags. Some might argue that Brown stayed professional by proceeding to rap/perform during the fellatio in question, and some fans are arguing that it’s hard to assume what Brown’s thought process was regardless of whether he wanted it or not, but let’s be real. Any single person that follows Danny on Twitter knows damn well the types of things he tweets and retweets. He knows damn well that there are slews of these Danny dick cravers that would take advantage of this opportunity in a heartbeat just to be his next retweet. Do we forget the interview Danny did with Mike Skinner where he references his past on-stage handjob and how he more or less facilitated it?

No, I was not at this show with a firsthand account so my perspective is certainly distanced but I believe Pryde’s article is more than biased. She’s referring to this as a rape and many are crying “hyperbole,” some that were in attendance included. This is nothing new to Danny. He revels in this lifestyle which has become apparent in his lyrics and social media presence, and is now growing more so in his live performances.

This will not be the last time something like this takes place. Kitty Pryde mentions that this was “probably the fastest thing [she’s] ever seen” and that it was “an actual sexual assault.” It was, however, long enough for someone to capture a pretty clear picture of and judging by the plethora of Danny-tagged tweets, plenty of fans saw it clearly enough to reference it. And if it were in fact a legitimate “sexual assault,” why was nothing done about this? Why didn’t Danny make a big deal about it but Kitty feels the need to? Is it because Danny would be embarrassed to withdraw from his macho gender role or his cocksure swagger to defend himself? A “rapper’s literal nightmare,” Pryde calls it. Anyone who afterwards retweets things like the following more than likely didn’t feel they were a victim, or they would have either reported it or left it entirely alone…

To be fair, I’ve always been a big fan of Danny’s music. Old is one of my most highly anticipated albums of 2013 and I’ve always enjoyed his ridiculousness. I’m not necessarily attacking Danny by writing this and I can’t even confidently say that I wouldn’t have encouraged the situation if it were me in his Jordans, but I feel that there comes many times when one needs to own up to their actions; this being one of them. Kitty Pryde, while articulate sure, seems confident in her defense but to call this rape and an “actual sexual assault” would lead one to believe that there was zero compliance from Danny, which just clearly isn’t the case based on the evidence.
