Jimmy Iovine And Dr. Dre Fund A New Academy At USC

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre gave USC $70 million to create a new academy. As if that school wasn’t already prestigious enough.

The two music heads teamed up to expand USC’s notoriety with their large gift. Their aim is to create a unique and promising undergraduate experience. The new academy will be called the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. Don’t worry, Dr. Dre is Andre Young.

The academy will offer a variety of programs from marketing to audio and visual design. The goal of all this though is to shape students into being innovators in their respected fields. So no more going to school just to regurgitate answers on tests, Iovine and Dre want this venture to have students who not only want to learn, but can bring something new to the world.

The most interesting part is that during a student’s fourth and final year, they’ll live in an experimental setting that’s being called the “Garage.” This sounds like some reality TV gig, but rest assured it’s educational. Students are placed in groups and then have to develop a prototype over the course of the school year.

The academy won’t be enrolling anyone until the fall of 2014. That’s when 25 lucky students will be the first 25 to take this experience on.
