STAND UP TUESDAYS: Mike Lawrence

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Mike Lawrence’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Mike Lawrence is a talent whose comedic star is on the rise, thanks to the recent premiere of his episode of Comedy Central’s “The Half Hour”, and, now, the release of his debut CD, Sadamantium. Recorded live at the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics (aka NerdMelt) in Hollywood, California, Sadamantium is a brilliantly creative take on life as a nerdy underdog that will leave you in stitches.

Lawrence has a unique ability to tie subjects together in unexpected (and hilarious) ways, and you never know exactly where he’s going with a punch line – in describing Batman as the ultimate Republican super hero, he ends up presenting a perfect comparison between Christian Bale’s Batman voice and a drag queen who’s given up at the end of a long night. His uncensored and unique style establishes him as one of the freshest voices in today’s stand-up scene.

Lovers of pop culture will enjoy Lawrence’s many references to various iconic moments, such as Hulk Hogan’s sex tape – in which Hogan spends far too much time attempting to open a condom.

“Man, I bet Hulk Hogan wishes condom wrappers were made of yellow t-shirts.”

Lawrence embraces his “Nerd Troubles” and sports a look that is only rivaled by a bearded homeless man. In hilarious, cringe-worthy detail, he recounts his days as a McDonald’s employee, notes his extensive “luck” with the ladies and offers up hard evidence as to why he does not drink: “I come from a long line of alcoholics. Our family tree has a car wrapped around it.”

What’s refreshing about Sadamantium is that one need not be a lover of all things nerd to enjoy Lawrence’s comedy. While he’s definitely focused on showcasing his inner nerd, he’s not out to alienate those who don’t share his preferences. Instead, he is able to paint a scenario in which his audience is able to almost live vicariously through his nerd-dom.

Lawrence has recently appeared on “Conan,” “Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast” and “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show” and is now headlining across the country, bringing his brand of geek chic to the masses. Available now in digital download, Sadamantium is a refreshing and entertaining CD from start to finish. Grab your copy today!

I haven’t heard Sadamantium yet, but after reading your review I can’t wait to give it a listen! Mike Lawrence is hilarious, and I love what you wrote about his embracing his nerd-dom. So many people try to do this, but he has somewhat of a hard edge to him that makes his brand of “nerd humor” refreshing and original. I especially love it when he’s on the Keith and The Girl podcast. Check him out at http://katg.com/guest/151/mike-lawrence
