Sony Announces ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ Movie Is In The Works

What was that? You read that right. For those who spent their early mornings in the 90s being green with Captain Planet and have been wondering when he was going to hit the big screen, wonder no more. The Hollywood Reporter has said Sony is working on a Captain Planet and the Planeteers movie, but it’s only at the script stage.

It might not rake in as much as Blockbusters like The Avengers and Iron Man, but how could you not be excited for this? The target audience will have to be those who grew up on it because kids today couldn’t care less about Saturday morning cartoons, unless there’s an app for it. So nostalgia will likely be the key to making this movie work.

For those who might’ve missed Captain Planet’s heyday – it was the story of five teens called upon to save the world from things like animal poaching and pollution. Think Power Rangers meets Peace Corps. It even had enough power back then to garner the vocal talents of stars like Sting and Meg Ryan.

Again, it’s just in the script stage but that won’t keep those who grew up on it from daydreaming about the perfect cast. Ryan Reynolds could be the lead, but we’ve all seen how well his latest movies have done.
