UTG APPROVED: Jaw-Dropping ‘In Saturn’s Rings’ Trailer Promotes Lack Of CGI

It’s hard to go to the movies anymore and see a film void of CGI, but one spring 2014 film promises to offer such an experience, and it’s without a doubt one of the biggest stories ever brought to the silver screen.

Using over one million photographs and absolutely no digital manipulation, mapping, or texturing, In Saturn’s Rings is 100% created using only flat 2D photographs (often hundreds or thousands per frame) stitched together for massive hundred megapixel+ resolutions that are scaled and zoomed using techniques developed by the filmmaker, based on Ken Burns and 2.5D photo animation processes. The first trailer prides itself on this fact, and the footage it offers justifies the ego. I’m not sure imagery this stunning has ever been brought to IMAX before, and knowing it’s all real makes it even more exciting.

Surprisingly, a computer is actually not even required to do tasks necessary for a film like In Saturn’s Rings to come to life. In fact, it could all be done exactly using photoanimation techniques from 100 years ago.

You can view the full trailer for In Saturn’s Rings below. The film is scheduled to open in Spring 2014, but IMAX is already booking screenings for interested exhibitors.
