Matt Nathanson Debuts “Kinks Shirt”

Matt Nathanson fell in love while creating his forthcoming album, and the results of his crush can now be heard in his new single, “Kinks Shirt.”

At a diner not far from the studio where Matt and his cohorts have spent part of 2013 recording their new album, a waitress caught the eye of Nathanson in a way no other could. He became shy at the the sight of her, and eventually found solace sharing his daydreams about their love with his songbook. Those notions eventually became lyrics and this morning USAToday premiered “Kinks Shirt” for the world to enjoy. You can stream the single at the end of this post.

“I like to think I spend most of my creative energy in those situations, imagining what my life would be like with the girl in the Kinks shirt, that kind of idea,” Nathanson admits. “As I was writing it, I allowed myself to run wild in this idea of how she lives in the Inner Sunset, which, to me, is like the most romantic part of San Francisco, because you start to move toward the ocean and the fog. It’s sort of constantly a Raymond Carver story on a certain level.”

Nathanson’s new album, Last Of The Great Pretenders, arrives in stores July 16.
