Megafaun and Arnold Dreyblatt Team Up For New Album

Psych-folk fellows Megafaun and minimalist composer Arnold Dreyblatt are teaming up to put out a new album this year called Appalachian Excitation. It’s looking like their combined efforts are resulting in music that escapes easy labeling and traditional song lengths. The album will hint at Americana, faded funk, and pretty dependable harmonies. The leading song off that album, “Home Hat Placement,” is now up on SoundCloud for your preview pleasures, so check it out after the jump.

The collaboration started after the two played at the Hopscotch Music Festival in North Carolina. Differences such as age (Megafaun is a group of younger men whereas Dreyblatt is past his 50s) and heritage (one being American and the other from Berlin) wind up working together well. As Dreyblatt said of Megafaun before last year’s Hopscotch, “Right away, I realized that there’s a folk element and instrumentation that was available to me suddenly. These guys have such a wide musical background. They’re familiar with the whole avant-garde. They can play folk music, rock music. They’re songwriters. They’re incredibly flexible and just put their heart right into it.”

Appalachian Excitation comes out Sept. 17 through Northern Spy Records. Give “Home Hat Placement” a listen below and share your thoughts in the comment section below.
