REVIEW: Color Me Valiant – ‘SinnerServantSon’

Artist: Color Me Valiant
Album: SinnerServantSon
Label: None
Genre: Metalcore

Color Me Valiant are a six piece metalcore outfit, hailing from Richmond, Virginia. On August 2 they released their sophomore EP, SinnerServantSon, via their Bandcamp page. This is the follow up to their EP, Secrets, which they released in January of 2012.

SinnerServantSon‘s first track, “Commissioned,” opens up with a spoken word intro: “This is a message of love // For those of you who have never felt the embrace of a father // This is a message of strength // For those whose burdens have proven too much to bear // And this is a message of grace // For those of you who believe you are never good enough // My God has paid your debt in full.” It then quickly leaps into full band mode, complete with fast-paced drum beats, punishing unclean vocals and an anthem-like closure to the song.

You can tell from the very first line that this band sings about love, family and faith. They’ve put a lot of time and passion into their music, and it shows. It’s easy to say that faith is a huge driving factor in their music, and will definitely be a welcomed sound to anyone who cherishes that element in their metal music. On the opposite side, if you don’t have a lot of faith, these guys might not be as appealing.

It’s hard to say that I have a favorite song on this EP, I feel that I like them all pretty equally. That’s a good thing, though at the same time not so good. Maybe it’s because I’m less spiritual, but I don’t feel much of a connection with their lyrics. I think anyone who doesn’t have as much spirituality as the men singing in this band would find it a little difficult to connect with the band lyrically. All of their songs have similar messages, so if you don’t connect with one, then you might not connect with any.

While the fact that they are a band of faith is not something that necessarily attracts me, it’s definitely a selling point to a lot of metalcore/hardcore fans out there. If that’s something that’s appealing to you, I’d suggest checking this album out. For only $.50 on Bandcamp, this is a great buy. I would recommend picking up this EP, even if it was $5.

SCORE: 7.5/10

I think out of all the artists trying to do the same metalcore stuff, these guys have a pretty refreshing sound. As a Christian, obviously I really enjoy the lyrics, but I truly enjoy the vast amount of tempos and varying degrees of heavy and soft elements. Thanks for the review!

I agree, they definitely have a refreshing sound. My biggest issue was just that I had a hard time relating to the lyrics, Other than that though I really enjoyed listening to the album.
