Of Montreal Announce Tour, Stream “She Ain’t Speakin’ Now”

Of Montreal have had a special place in my heart ever since I was a depressed teenager whose only emotionally outlet was happily singing along to (and yes, this is a real song title from The Early Four Track Recordings) “Dustin Hoffman Becomes Indignant And Wets Himself.” Though their style has not changed an incredible amount through the years (psychedelic dance indie pop will always be psychedelic dance indie pop), they have grown and spiced up the flavors as time has worn on. A new song, “She Ain’t Speakin’ Now,” is about as different as their material has ever gotten: the track is has a semi-acoustic verse and an heavy intro and chorus, but overall is a throwback to sounds more common with pop music from the 1960s.

This song is one of the best songs by the band since 2007’s Icons, Abstract Thee in my opinion. It’s catchier and deeper than most of their recent work, while still maintaining artistic integrity and their unique sound. Of course, maybe I’m just a sucker for anything that sounds like Kevin Barnes trying to write a Beatles song.

The track is on the upcoming album Sylvianbriar, to be released on Polyvinyl Records on October 8. Barnes told Rolling StoneI wrote the song when both my wife and daughter were bedridden with a terrible illness… It was during the middle of our recording sessions for Sylvianbriar, so I was pretty paranoid about catching what they had. I would sort of hold my breath whenever I was near them. I wrote the song while fearing the worst. Fortunately, they both recovered.” With the Rolling Stone stream was also a tour announcement. Stream the song here and look at the tour dates after the break.
