Mitch Hurwitz Is Officially Working On An ‘Arrested Development’ Movie

Arrested Development has had the strangest of fates. While Family Guy got cancelled and came back from the dead to go back on FOX, Arrested Development got cancelled, had all of its cast members grow significantly older, was rumored to have a movie, got an exclusive production deal with Netflix, and then had an additional season that (mild spoiler alert) has an ending that is essentially inconclusive. Fans have been left wondering what’s next for AD: will Netflix do another season? Will a feature film happen? Will the show be picked up by network television?

The answer is apparently that there will be a feature film. Creator Mitch Hurwitz told Rolling Stone, “I’m working on the movie right now. I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.” He later comments that the hold up with the Netflix season was scheduling, and uses this as the basis for the film idea. “A TV season is a six-month commitment. But I think it would be very doable to get them together for four or five weeks to make a movie.

It should be noted that the film has not been approved by the studio, but with the actors all on board and the Netflix season building towards something more, you’d have to feel optimistic. Rolling Stone reports that the ultimate plan is to have a feature length film and then yet another season of the show. Fingers crossed that it all works out.

20th Century Fox loves to keep fans from getting what they want. Between this and another X-Files movie I’m really starting to think they’re getting a kick out of this.
